Description

Many world-class manufacturing operations use cell technology, where several related functions are accomplished by a select team. In some cases, Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) store raw materials, Work-in-Process (WIP), and purchased parts that are used in the manufacturing cells. Such a system is known as a Use-Point Manager.

Characteristics of Use Point Manager Systems
  • Buffers raw materials, WIP, and purchased parts in an AS/RS buffer.
  • Supports a manufacturing, curing, or assembly process.
  • Provides independent and selective access to material.
  • Material is delivered to and removed from the workstation:
    • As required for the process operation(s).
    • When required by the operator or machine (pulls work).
  • Has an integrated inventory management system, ranging from simple load tracking to a full Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
  • Can be used to decouple operations to smooth out the work flow through the overall process.
Typical Benefits:
  • Real-time inventory control:
    • Instantaneous update with every inventory transaction.
    • Typically paperless transactions.
  • Floor space reduced 30 to 80%.
  • In-process inventory reduced 20 to 70%.
  • Cycle time reduced 40 to 75%.
  • Productivity increased 20 to 100%.
  • Non-value added time reduced 50 to 80%.
  • Quality improvement increased by 1 to 2 sigma.
  • Productivity-sapping clutter avoided.
  • Substantially improved return on assets.
