Description
Many world-class manufacturing operations use cell technology, where several related functions are accomplished by a select team. In some cases, Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) store raw materials, Work-in-Process (WIP), and purchased parts that are used in the manufacturing cells. Such a system is known as a Use-Point Manager.
Characteristics of Use Point Manager Systems
Buffers raw materials, WIP, and purchased parts in an AS/RS buffer.
Supports a manufacturing, curing, or assembly process.
Provides independent and selective access to material.
Material is delivered to and removed from the workstation:
As required for the process operation(s).
When required by the operator or machine (pulls work).
Has an integrated inventory management system, ranging from simple load tracking to a full Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
Can be used to decouple operations to smooth out the work flow through the overall process.
Typical Benefits:
Real-time inventory control:
Instantaneous update with every inventory transaction.
