Material Handling Information - Push-Back Pallet Rack

Material Storage Buffers
Push-Back Pallet Rack
Push-back pallet rack offers an ideal storage and retrieval solution for high-turnover distribution operations. Pallets are stored at a slight incline on free-rolling pallet carts in two-, three-, or four-deep configurations. Pallets are stored and retrieved in Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) order from one aisle. The push-back pallet rack delivers high-density storage without sacrificing throughput, and it provides a maximum number of pallet picking faces on the aisle.

Product Type
  • Manual pallet storage with free-rolling pallet cart.
Product Components
  • Storage rack (10-30 ft. max. height).
  • Pallet cart.
  • Forklift.

  • Maximum load weight: 3,000 lbs. per pallet (1,360 kg).
  • Maximum height: Limited by reach of forklift, about 30 ft. (9 m).
  • Tracks: 3" structural channel.
  • Pallet cart: 3" x 3" x 1/4" structural angle, four 1,000 capacity wheels, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" X 3/16" cross ties.
Product Variations
  • Pallet widths: 40", 42", 48".
  • 2-, 3-, 4-deep configurations.

Integration Options
Technology Overview
  • Lanes in the push-back pallet rack may have addresses that are identified by a Warehouse Management System (WMS) that directs operators where to store and retrieve items.
Operations
  • Input
    • Operator either delivers load to the lane designated for that SKU or finds an opening and records where the load was stored.
    • Depending on the configuration, one, two, or three pallet carts are nested in an empty lane.
    • The first pallet stored in the lane is placed on the top pallet cart. When subsequent pallets are stored, the forklift pushes the existing pallet/cart back in the lane, exposing the next available cart until the lane is full.
  • Output
    • Operator retrieves the first pallet from the rack using a forklift.
    • Gravity pushes the remaining pallet(s) to the front of the rack on the pallet carts.
Applications
  • Ideally suited for storing a large quantity of relatively few high-throughput SKUs; especially effective when one SKU is assigned per lane.
  • Can be used in order-picking operations for storing reserve stock.
  • Works best in warehouses with 15 to 30 ft. ceiling clear heights.
  • Commonly used in freezer applications.
