Material Handling Information - Conventional Shelving
Material Storage Buffers
Conventional Shelving
Using
shelves for product storage is an economical and versatile
storage method that is easily modified as requirements change.
The vertical height of shelving is usually below six feet
but may go up to 15 feet high if movable stairs are to be
used for picking product from the higher shelves. Shelving
works well with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and picking
carts.
Product Type
Manual carton and tote storage.
Product Components
Storage rack (4-15 ft. max. height).
Wood or metal rack shelves.
Product Specifications
Maximum load weight: 40-50 lbs. (18-22.5 kg).
Maximum height: 6-7 ft. (2.1 m) if workers access shelving without stairs; up to 15 ft. (4.5 m) if workers use movable stairs to reach higher levels.
Locations in shelving may have addresses that are identified
by a Warehouse Management System (WMS)
that directs operators where to store and retrieve items.
Signal lights may also be attached above or beneath shelving locations to indicate when to pick items from that location. These lights are controlled by a pick-to-light system.
Operations
