Material Handling Information - Conventional Shelving

Material Storage Buffers
Conventional Shelving
Using shelves for product storage is an economical and versatile storage method that is easily modified as requirements change. The vertical height of shelving is usually below six feet but may go up to 15 feet high if movable stairs are to be used for picking product from the higher shelves. Shelving works well with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and picking carts.

Product Type
  • Manual carton and tote storage.
Product Components
  • Storage rack (4-15 ft. max. height).
  • Wood or metal rack shelves.
Product Specifications
  • Maximum load weight: 40-50 lbs. (18-22.5 kg).
  • Maximum height: 6-7 ft. (2.1 m) if workers access shelving without stairs; up to 15 ft. (4.5 m) if workers use movable stairs to reach higher levels.
Product Variations
  • Rated load capacity.
  • Height of rack.
  • Distribution of tiers.
  • Distance between uprights.
  • Quantity used.
Integration Options
  • Direct access.
  • Pick-to-light.
  • Support of flow rack.
Technology Overview
  • Locations in shelving may have addresses that are identified by a Warehouse Management System (WMS) that directs operators where to store and retrieve items.
  • Signal lights may also be attached above or beneath shelving locations to indicate when to pick items from that location. These lights are controlled by a pick-to-light system.
Operations
  • Input
    • Operator either delivers item to a dedicated location for that SKU or finds an opening and records where the item was stored.
  • Output
    • Operator either retrieves full container from shelving or picks individual items out of container.
Applications
  • Forward pick operations.
  • Primarily for storage of relatively small raw materials and finished goods.
  • Works best in warehouses with 8 to 15 foot ceiling clear heights.
