10 Steps to Get There
Logistics Study
The logistics study process forces you to document
the flow of material through your operation, helping
to identify problem areas.
Gather operational data on:
Material movement.
Storage.
Volume.
Control.
Use a layout of your facility to document the flow of material from receiving to shipping:
Chart and measure the actual material flow path through your facility.
At every place material stops for whatever reason (e.g., inspection, storage, subassembly, WIP stacks, final assembly, packaging, shipping, place a pin in the layout.
When you have finished, connect the pins, in order,
with string. The result often looks like a plate of spaghetti.
Add up the length of all the strings; this will give you a good idea of how far material really travels and why it takes so long to get through your factory.
Identify essential vs. nonessential touches.
Interview main material handling players, including operators.
Identify key problems.
Brainstorm how to solve problems by simplifying material flow, control, speed, and process.
Review applicable problem and solution scenarios and available material handling technology.
