Material Handling Information - Poor Storage Density

Poor Storage Density

Dedicated location storage often causes empty, underutilized storage space.

Going vertical with Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems can free up floor space and reduce manpower in almost any storage/picking area.
Problem
  • Lack of granularity in conventional storage.
  • Product is not stored in the proper storage medium.
  • Lack of volume management.
  • Wasted vertical space due to an out of date tier height configuration in conventional stores.
  • Use of dedicated locations instead of random location storage.
  • Lack of dead stock visibility.
  • Lack of an adequate dead stock elimination procedure.
  • Unused vertical space. Rack systems do not use full height of the building.
  • Overly wide aisles in the conventional stores.
Solution
  • Use a Warehouse Management Software (WMS) with RF technology to:
    • Direct product to its proper storage area.
    • Define rack granularity.
    • Provide volume management.
    • Provide random location tracking.
  • Use a data mining techniques to provide visibility of dead stock.
  • Develop good elimination procedures for dead stock.
  • Fully utilize vertical space by implementing tall rack shelving or AS/RS storage.
  • Update current rack tier height configuration to match the current product and minimize open space.
  • Consider the use of VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) or AS/RS technology to free up floor space.
